Thierry Mugler is a designer with a unique, revolutionary style. He likes to play with strong shapes and materials, such as leather, metal and vinyl. Like most successful designers he created a signature scent, Angel, in 1991, with other scents to follow. It was a sensation, featuring Chocolate, Vanilla, Caramel, Berries, Honey, and Bergamot with spicier base notes such as patchouli and sandalwood. Angel became a fragrance in a unique category: oriental gourmand. Like other unique scents, people either love it, or loathe it. But everyone knows it and many can identify it from across a room, by the scent.
The latest scent from Thierry Mugler is called Womanity. "What if women spoke out about the pleasures of femininity – of being women, together, in the world today? And what if women built for themselves the community that unites them? That "women can have it all and do it for themselves" seems to be the empowering essence of the story for Womanity.
Mugler's Angel used "food" oriented notes to create a new category of fragrance: gourmand. And in Womanity he again plays with the notion of food oriented notes. Womanity has contrasting notes of sweet and savory. Created by the fragrance house of Mane under the direction of perfumer Fabrice Pellegrin, the perfumers used high tech processes to extract natural aromas of fig for the sweet aspects of the scent and the savory(or salty) notes, original and sensual include a particularly luxurious one: caviar. Structure was provided from the woodsy elements of the fig tree.
I'm a Mugler fan. I love the way his fragrances blend with my body chemistry and let me make it my own. And I don't need to use half a bottle to enjoy the scent on my own skin! Nothing this designer does is for the shrinking violet. Mugler fragrances make statements. Womanity comes on strong right from the getgo, and stays nicely on the skin. It has some citrus to begin with, but it's moderately sweet, especially when the lovely, milky, green fig accord comes into play. I can't find anyone who has offered up the entire olfactory pyramid for Womanity, but apparently there are floral notes, along with some more unique notes that seem perfectly in keeping with Mugler's love of unusual materials: opium smoke, heated granite, crushed flowers, ozone, to name a few. If I had to categorize this scent, upon drydown, it still has that signature, gourmand attitude that appear in most, if not all, of the other Mugler fragrances. But it is less blowsy and more universally pleasing. I woman who doesn't really love Angel or Alien or Star, may finally find in Womanity, a new fragrance to embrace. You may love it, or not, but Womanity has already created quite a buzz. It's going to get your attention, and when you wear it, you'll get the attention of others (in a good way), too.
*** FOR BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH**** During October, Thierry Mugler will donate all proceeds from the Womanity Bath & Body Collection (see "The Collection" below) to benefit Look Good, Feel Better. a free support program that helps people with cancer improve their appearance and self esteem, so they can manage their treatment, and work their way to recovery, with more confidence
...and then there's the bottle! Like the fragrance within, you'll either "get it" or you will wonder what the Thierry Mugler was thinking. The "juice" is pale pink (the feminine aspect) but the rest of the bottle is chunky, bold, matte metal with with a ring topper linked to a chain that smacks of fetish jewelry. The bottle is also sculpted, and the overall feeling is powerful and industrial, and like something out of an apocalyptic sci fi movie. However, when you turn the bottle to the side, you see the sculpted face of a woman, with the headdress of a warrior as if she is a figurehead on the prow of a ship. It's surprising, unique, and attractive. I tried the 1 fl. oz. bottle, but the larger bottles have even more metallic detail.
The outer carton is less fantastic, a simple, pale pink and silver carton that while not exactly "super girly," still conveys the "girls only" message. The cardboard is recycled, and recyclable, cardboard. In keeping with eco-conscious ideas, the perfume bottle (as with other Thierry Mugler fragrances) is also infinitely, refillable. Curiously, however, Mugler includes a steel-grey fabric pouch to protect the refillable bottle.
